  1. Bell work # 4 or #5 List (2) things you learned about your Civil War VIPEQ: What was the outcome of early war battles?

  2. Objective and Scales: • The student will be able to evaluate the outcome of decisive battles and compare/contrast the war in different regions in the Civil War with 80% accuracy • What goal are we working toward mastery of? • Goal C and F • TOC: Page 102: Early Battle Outcomes/E.P.

  3. 1. What was the war strategy of each nation? • The North’s goal was to invade, conquer and occupy the Southern States to eventually force readmission to the USA • The South’s goal was to maintain control of the southern states(stay independent) and eventually invade the North

  4. 2. What happened at Bull Run? • First Manassas (Bull Run)-first major land battles of the two armies in Virginia • Union Gen. McDowell vs. Confederate Gen. Joseph E. Johnston and Brig. Gen. P.G.T. Beauregard • Armies clash and the Union is forced to retreat to Washington • But, Confederate forces are too disorganized to pursue them • This battle convinced the Lincoln administration that the war would be a long and costly affair • Confederate WIN (experience and home field) • Lincoln will fire McDowell and replace him with Maj. Gen. George B. McClellan

  5. 3. What happened in Antietam(3 days)? • Maj. Gen. George B. McClellan confronted Lee’s Army of Northern Virginia at Sharpsburg, Maryland. • McClellan was overly cautious against Lee’s experienced army • McClellan had the advantage of the “Lost-orders” and was too slow in acting (he lost the advantage) • However, with almost double the troops, the Union pushed Lee’s army to retreat • McClellan did not pursue the battered Rebel army (he should have), and Lincoln fires him! • Results are inconclusive; however, Lincoln manufactures a win because he needs to boost morale in the US to deliver the Emancipation Proclamation Fired!

  6. 4. What happened at Shiloh? • April 6th and 7th, 1862-Tennessee • Union Gen. Ulysses Grant/Don Carlos Buell vs. PGT Beauregard/Albert Sidney Johnston • Union army established a battle line known as the “hornet’s nest” • Johnston will be mortally wounded, Union wins this one • Beauregard will retreat after suffering tremendous casualties • Grant sends William Sherman with two brigades to pursue PGT
