  2. Organization • 12H00 – 13H00 Lunch for 16 persons (registered…) • at the cafeteria lab downstairs • 13H00 – 14H00 Steering committee • 15H20 – 15H40 Coffee break • Meeting end 17H00

  3. ESRF LPSC ILL CNRS LNCMI CEA-G MINATEC LPSC presentation Laboratoire de Physique Subatomique et de Cosmologie Grenoble agglomeration 420.000 inhabitants 8 universities and higher education institutions 60.000 students (8.000 foreign students) Research: 21.000 persons in more than 200 labs. (14.500 in public research) One of the 3 biggest pole for research in Science in France Many High tech industries (STMicro, HP, Motorola, Silicon Graphics…) ILL (neutrons), ESRF (X rays), EMBL (Biology), LNCMI (High magnetic Fields), Neel Institute, CEA (INAC, LETI), MINATEC (nanotechnology) …

  4. The LPSC few facts and numbers • The laboratory • Part of IN2P3 (Institute with 21 laboratories in France) • About 215 staff people • 65 Physicists, 100 Technical staff, 30 PhD students, 20 Postdoc, ... • More than 60 students trained in reasearch each year (Master, thesis) • Budget 3-4 M€/year (not including salaries) • 2-3 M€ for the scientific projects • ≈ 75 % from IN2P3 • ≈ 25 % from University, Europe, ANR, Industry • More than 30 projects underway

  5. Projects @ LPSC • Particle physics and fundamental symetries • ATLAS, D0, ILC, nEDM, GRANIT, Theory – particle physics • Astroparticles and cosmology • AMS, CREAM, AUGER, CODALEMA, CMB polar, MIMAC, PLANCK • Nuclear Physics • ALICE, ISOLDE, LOHENGRIN, Theory – nucleus and nucleons • Energy applications • PEREN, GUINEVERE • Medical applications • Hadrontherapy (ETOILE/CNAO), GATE, TOMO LXe, Architep, Topaze med • Accelerators and ion sources • Industrial applications

  6. 10 Technical services 100 Engineers & Technicians Accelerator and ion sources pole  20 persons Evaluated as a physics group by CNRS commissions and French government agency (AERES february 2009)

  7. 28 m Projects at LPSC and Accelerator pole • Organisation of the work is project oriented • A new project is evaluated by an internal commission and a local scientific committee • The activities of the people are recorded in a IN2P3 database (ISIS) • Technical resources • 8 ‘electrostatic accelerators’ with magnetic optics 2 are to be integrated in large machines • 2 are operated for Physics (GUINEVERE, MIMAC) • RF laboratory and clean room • Experimental areas • for ion beam surface treatments • for new (and possibly large) experimental setups • Funding • Project oriented funding • Spiral2 : equipment, travel • European programmes • EUROTRANS, CARE/EUCARD, EURONS, EURISOL, EURO-nu • ANR (RACCAM) • National and regional project contract (CPER 2007 - 2013) • CNRS and IN2P3 • Industrial contracts (Orsay Physics, Bodycote..) • Public labs contracts (LCAM, IPNL, ISOLDE, IRSN…) Some examples …

  8. 6.50 m 6.60 m GUINEVERE project and follow up… • Design and construction of a cw and pulsed deuteron accelerator • Advanced Driven Systems (nuclear reactor driven by an accelerator) GUINEVERE • to be coupled to the VENUS nuclear reactor in Belgium • Achievements • Design and construction (2007-09) • Experimental beam characterization (august 09) • Disassembly, delivery and reconstruction in Belgium (fall 09) • Under evaluation for SPIRAL2 (due to skills, place and topology) • SPIRAL2 N+ line design, construction and experimental validation GENEPI-3C au LPSC (août 09)

  9. SPIRAL2 project (highest priority) • RF power couplers for LINAC supra (0.8 IR,1 IE, 1 AI) • Design, prototypes, production, preparation, delivery of 30 couplers • Booster (1+/n+) for radioactive ion beams (0.25 IR, 1 IE, 0.5 AI) • Design, construction and tests, simplification, better characteristics, Nuclearization • Low Energy Beam Line (0.5 IR LPSC, 0.5 IR IPNL, 2.5 AI, labos externes) • Construction (mid 2008-mi d2009) first SPIRAL2 injector part • Beam production tests, optics, instrumentation, command and control • stable ions source (Q/A=1/3 - 1/6) (0.5 IR LPSC, 1 AI) • Development of the source, tests, construction, delivery If we succeed with SPIRAL2 ‘we are allowed’ to go on with 60 GHz programme and EURO-nu…
