Friendship My Poetry AnthologyBy: Sarah Saunders Mrs. Breen Period 5 April 30th, 2010
Introduction I wrote my poetry anthology on Friendship. I choose this topic because I care a lot for my friends and I think it is a very valuable thing in life. You can learn things from having friends and also learn lessons from the mistakes you may make with them. I know from personally experience that my friends are the ones I trust and I respect them in every way possible because they are there for me and make the best of my teenage years come real. The poems that I've found on the internet appeal to me in many ways because I can relate to them. I can relate to them from my past and the things I have done with my friends. One poem that I like is the first one because in the first two stanzas it basically explains how me and my friends are when we’re together. The second poem I chose is something I can’t relate to just now because I'm not old yet, but in the future I will look back at my friends and hopefully be able to relate to this poem. Poem number six I can really relate to because it is more modern and it explains things that me and my best friends would do everyday.

The Best of Friends By: Jill Wolf The best of friends, Can change a frown, Into a smile, when you feel down. The best of friends, Will understand, Your little trials, And lend a hand. The best of friends, Will always share, Your secret dreams, Because they care. The best of friends, Worth more than gold, Give all the love, A heart can hold. Poem #1 Wolf, Jill. “The Best of Friends.” “pachome1.pacific.net” http://pachome1.pacific.net.sg/~dol_fin/bof.html
Poem #2 When you are old By: William Butler Yeats When you are old and grey and full of sleep, And nodding by the fire, take down this book, And slowly read, and dream of the soft look Your eyes had once, and of their shadows deep; How many loved your moments of glad grace, And loved your beauty with love false or true, But one man loved the pilgrim Soul in you, And loved the sorrows of your changing face; And bending down beside the glowing bars, Murmur, a little sadly, how Love fled And paced upon the mountains overhead And hid his face amid a crowd of stars. Yeats, William Butler. “When you are old.” “poemhunter.com” http://www.poemhunter.com/poem/when-you-are-old/
Poem #3 Happiness By: Raymond Carver So early it's still almost dark out. I'm near the window with coffee, and the usual early morning stuff that passes for thought. When I see the boy and his friend walking up the road to deliver the newspaper. They wear caps and sweaters, and one boy has a bag over his shoulder. They are so happy they aren't saying anything, these boys. I think if they could, they would take each other's arm. It's early in the morning, and they are doing this thing together. They come on, slowly. The sky is taking on light, though the moon still hangs pale over the water. Such beauty that for a minute death and ambition, even love, doesn't enter into this. Happiness. It comes on unexpectedly. And goes beyond, really, any early morning talk about it. Carver, Raymond. “Happiness.” “plagiartis.com” http://plagiarist.com/poetry/7454/
Poem #4 Be A Friend By: Edgar A Guest Be a friend. You don't need money: Just a disposition sunny; Just the wish to help another Get along some way or other; Just a kindly hand extended Out to one who's unbefriended; Just the will to give or lend, This will make you someone's friend. Be a friend. You don't need glory. Friendship is a simple story. Pass by trifling errors blindly, Gaze on honest effort kindly, Cheer the youth who's bravely trying, Pity him who's sadly sighing; Just a little labor spend On the duties of a friend. Be a friend. The pay is bigger (Though not written by a figure) Than is earned by people clever In what's merely self-endeavor. You'll have friends instead of neighbors For the profits of your labors; You'll be richer in the end Than a prince, if you're a friend Guest, Edgar A. “Be A Friend.” “famous-poems.biz” http://www.famous-poems.biz/friendship_poems/Be-A-Friend-new-friendship-poem-by-Edgar-A-Guest.html
Poem #5 A Golden Chain By: Helen Steiner Rice Friendship is a Golden Chain, The links are friends so dear, And like a rare and precious jewel It's treasured more each year... It's clasped together firmly With a love that's deep and true, And it's rich with happy memories and fond recollections, too... Time can't destroy its beauty For, as long as memory lives, Years can't erase the pleasure That the joy of friendship gives... For friendship is a priceless gift That can't be bought or sold, But to have an understanding friend Is worth far more than gold... And the Golden Chain of Friendship Is a strong and blessed tie Binding kindred hearts together As the years go passing by. Rice, Helen Steiner. “A Golden Chain.” “gagirl.com” http://www.gagirl.com/friends/friends.html
