Jose Antonio Agirre: A Basque Hero of Europe

José Antonio Agirre Lekube, born in Bilbao in 1904, was a key figure in Basque politics as the first President of the Basque Autonomous Government of Euzkadi. During the Spanish Civil War, he led the Basque Army against Franco's forces and later worked in exile against Nazism and Fascism. Despite facing adversity, Agirre's legacy as a European hero endures.
