About Ishmael • Born November 23, 1980 • Victim of a civil war in Sierra Leone • Became a child soldier at the age of 13 • Rescued by UNICEF and deprogrammed • Left Sierra Leone in 1997 to come to New York. • He attended high school and got a college degree from Oberlin College in 2004 in Political Science • He returned home in 2009 with an ABC News crew to talk about his country and experiences. • He works as an advocate for children worldwide through UNICEF now.
