Some Ideas to Consider • Unlike China, which emerged from an ancient civilization, classical India emerged when invaders built on the ruins of the vanquished Harrapan cultures of the Indus River • Religion played a key role in the development of classical India • Most diffused world religions originated in India and Middle East • Classical India characterized by the most rigid system of social class of any classical culture • Like China, the legacy of classical India continues in areas beyond (as evidenced by the spread of Buddhism and Hinduism)
