Define these in your notes: • matter • pure substance • element • atom • compound • molecule • mixture • homogeneous mixture • heterogeneous mixture • physical property • physical change • physically blended • chemical property • chemical change • chemically bonded
Definitions • matter – has mass and volume; “stuff” that makes everything • pure substance – sample of something with the same composition throughout • element – substance that cannot be broken into simpler substances by chemically or physically • atom – fundamental particle that makes elements • compound – atoms of two or more elements bonded together
Definitions • molecule– fundamental particle of a compound • mixture– composition varies • homogeneous mixture – ratio of substances is the same throughout (solution) • heterogeneous mixture – regions of the mixture differ from each other • physical property - characteristics that describe the way something is
Definitions • physical change – affect the arrangement of particles but NOT the identity • physically blended - mixed • chemical property – describe the ability of a substance to form something new • chemical change – bonds change to form a new substance • chemically bonded – atoms held together by forces between electrons and nuclei
