  1. Today we are going to learn to compare fractions to determine if they are equivalent

  2. Raise your hand if you’ve ever had chicken nuggets or fried chicken. • Raise your hand if you’ve ever had bagel bites or pizza. • Raise your hand if you’ve ever had a small McFlurry or a large McFlurry.

  3. Sometimes you have different sized fractions, so its not fair to trade them because they are different sizes. In order to make it fair, we have to make the fractions equal. We call this equivalent.

  4. A quarter is not worth as much as a dollar. But four quarters is the same as a dollar, they are equivalent.

  5. The first circle is 4/12 purple. The second circle is 1/3 purple. If we put the 4 small pieces together, they are just as big as the one big piece, they are equivalent.

  6. It doesn’t matter how many pieces you have, or what size they are. What matters is that that when you put them altogether at the end, they are the same size, EQUIVALENT.
