  1. Computer Networks II CS 4457 / 9657Course OverviewFall 2019Lecture 3Sept 24th 2019

  2. Course DescriptionToday’s ISP Network: An Example

  3. Course Description: Topics to be covered Major Functional Areas of a Communication Networks Systems (e.g., ISP)

  4. Network Planning Unit • One of the core technical units of any ISPs • Main tasks of network planners: • To make sure network maintains an adequate capacity at all time to carry the traffic without any interruption • Provide short term and long term capacity plan by working with network forecast group • Design network architecture, network upgrades etc. and hand over the design to network Operations for implementation / deployment • Works closely with networks operations team, technology development team, traffic forecast team, and network costing team • Provides yearly plan on network upgrade / modernization

  5. Network Planning Unit • Main tasks of network planners: • Identify network links and routers/devices that are approaching capacity threshold; and issue capacity augment ticket immediately to initiate new capacity build • For any new network footprint expansion project, network planners design and develop business cases by working with technology development and network economics group. Any network investment is evaluated based on revenue impact, impact on customer experience / satisfaction, and long term strategic benefits.

  6. Technology Development Unit • Main tasks of technology development / research team: • Equip the network with state-of-the-art technology and solutions to make sure the ISP can support and offer the next generation services and applications • To stay competitive in the market from technology perspective • Works very closely with network planner and provides input to the planning team so that the network planners can include the new technology driven upgrades in their network design and plan • Develop technical guideline (often by introducing new technologies) to bring down the traffic unit cost i.e., cost of carrying per unit of traffic in the network • Vendor negotiations to get the best deal in the market

  7. Network Operations Unit • Main tasks of Network Operations: • To make sure network is running 24/7 without any interruption • Work closely with network planning. Receives network design and plan from network planning and implement the design • Monitor network QoS 24/7. Monitor for network failure and initiate steps immediately to fix any failure/interruption • Issue and manage network maintenance and repair tickets, and in touch with the customers • Collects network health related stats using various tools. Analyze the data and identify any current network issue or potential future issue that need immediate attention • Design and manage all network change management activities

  8. Network Economics Unit • Main tasks of Network Economics Unit: • Develop cost models to provide costing details for any new or existing services/products. Also, provide costing for network architecture/infrastructure • Provide costing details under Capital and Expenses categories • Updates the existing cost models regular basis based on ongoing network changes/upgrades • Work closely with network planning team. Provide financial/economic model related input to network planning to evaluate network investment related business cases • Responds to regulatory (CRTC) enquiry and questions

  9. Network Traffic Forecast • Network Capacity Planning • Assist network planners to plan and acquire necessary network resources to meet future traffic growth • Capital forecast • Assist ISP finance BU to optimally allocate financial resources in order to meet future traffic growth • Revenue forecast • Assist ISP strategic / finance BU to estimate future year/s revenue coming from various services • Service growth • Assist strategic planning/product/marketing BUs to analyse the current and future market trend

  10. Network Traffic Forecast Internal and External Parameters Impacting Traffic Forecast Internal factors affecting Future Traffic Growth External factors affecting Future Traffic Growth

  11. Network Traffic Forecast: A top-down approach 1 BI  Traffic Data 2 Traffic Data CO level 3 Capacity req analysis at CO level 4 Capital $$ estimate at CO level
