  1. Acknowledgement of Country I would like to acknowledge that this meeting is being held on the traditional lands of the Wurundjeri people. I would like to pay my respects to their Elders both past and present and to any Elders from other communities who are here today.

  2. Project Overview Project Scope and Context Made possible by grant from RE Ross Trust Literacy Toolbox pegged to Australian Core Skills Framework (ACSF) levels for learning, reading, writing and oral communication • to enable learning to be targeted to areas of need • designed for one-on-one tutoring; client matched with volunteer tutor   • employability skills focus • to allow sufficient flexibility to engage with the cohort/enable some self-selection • to build on existing best-practice tools/resources • demonstrate an evidence base/rationale

  3. Project Overview Program Aim: Tobuild the capacity of clients who are disconnected from study, training and/or work, to empower them to identify their learning plan, work aspirations and build their readiness to engage in further learning and/or work. The Literacy Toolbox is pegged to the Australian Core Skills Framework (ACSF) Key Features of the ACSF • The ACSF describes each of the five core skills • Five levels of performance ranging from 1 (low level performance) to 5 (high level performance)

  4. The ACSF • Four performance variables that may influence a person's performance at any time: • support • context • text complexity • task complexity. • Three Domains of Communication, broad contexts within which the core skill may be used: • personal and community • workplace and employment • education and training

  5. Performance levels in the ACSF • Five levels of performance • Each level in each core skill is described in detail to enable consistent decisions to be made about an individual's performance at any point in time. • The five levels of performance represent milestones along a continuum of performance. • The levels of performance are described using: • Indicators • Focus Areas • Performance Features • Sample Activities.

  6. Performance Indicators in the ACSF

  7. Assessing Students Levels of Performance Students will be assessed using the Literacy and Learning assessments currently used by the Brotherhood of St. Laurence RTO. Tutors will be given the details of their students assessments , these are usually in the form of a “spiky profile”. • Spiky profiles • An individual may be operating across different levels within a core skill, demonstrating some Performance Features across two or more levels, or performing more strongly in one Domain of Communication than in another. • It is also likely that an individual will not perform at the same ACSF level across all five core skills. This can be captured visually in what is called a 'spiky profile' (Bateson 2001).

  8. A Spiky Profile

  9. How the Literacy Toolbox is organised There are two forms of the Literacy Toolbox: The hard copy File The WIKKI version available on the web You can access the wikki version using your password and can download activities and information stored there.

  10. How the Literacy Toolbox File is organised • There are four sections: • Learning • Reading • Writing • Oral Communication • In each section there are Visual Indexes One which gives details of all activities for all levels 1 to 3 One for each of the three levels, giving details of the activities for that level In each section there are Tutor Guidance notes and Student Guidance notes In each section there are Core Activities for each level

  11. How the Literacy Toolbox Wikki is Organised • In the Four areas of • Learning • Reading • Writing • Oral communication • The Literacy Toolbox Wikki also has additional information and activities for tutors and students to access. • Tutor access • Background information • Research documents • All activities at all levels • Additional activities • Access to message area • Student Access • All activities

  12. How to use the Literacy Toolbox • A Simple Road Map Stage 1 LLL assessment results – the spiky profile Stage 2 read Visual Index for the skill area and level and locate activities Stage 3 Get to know your student and plan your journey together Stage 4 set off and enjoy the ride! Stage 5 Assess progress along the way Stage 6 Arrive at destination for this journey Stage 7 Plan the next journey!

  13. Thank You!! • Thank you for becoming the most important part of the literacy toolbox…. • Without your time, commitment , experience and expertise the toolbox is a useless resource… • So….Let’s get started!
