Common CoreState Standards Brought to you people who may not have taught in a long time…..
Instructional changes • All Grades P-8 should be instructed using the CCLS • Units for these instructional changes or “shifts,” can be found on http://engageny.org • State tests Gr 3-8 will have less time; text will be authentic—longer and more rigorous; no calculators in Book 1, but required in Books 2 and 3 • ELA state tests are given over 3 days, covering 4 books; no speaking or listening tested
The Shifts: ELA • Balancing informational and literary texts (P-5) • Building subject area knowledge (Gr 6-12) • Increasing complexity from grade to grade • Answering text-based questions • Writing from sources • Building academic vocabularies
Overview of Standards for History/Social Studies, Science, and Technical Subjects Reading Standards for History/Social Studies, Science, and Technical Subjects • Knowledge of domain-specific vocabulary • Analyze, evaluate, and differentiate primary and secondary sources • Synthesize quantitative and technical information, including facts presented in maps, timelines, flowcharts, or diagrams Writing Standards for History/Social Studies, Science, and Technical Subjects • Write arguments on discipline-specific content and informative/explanatory texts • Use of data, evidence, and reason to support arguments and claims • Use of domain-specific vocabulary
The Shifts: Mathematics • Focus: spend more time on priority concepts; fewer topics • Coherence: look at the prior year’s learning and the expectation for the next year • Fluency: master basic skills, high quality and high volume practice • Deep Understanding: every student “gets it” before moving on • Application: to other subject areas and the real world • Dual Intensity: combine fluency and practice
What does this mean? • PreK-5 focuses on the basic operations plus fractions and decimals • 6-8 adds geometry, algebra and probability and statistics • High School centers around number and quantity, algebra, functions, geometry and probability and statistics
