  2. Basic Information • Born May 22, 1813 in Leipzig, Germany • Father died during typhoid epidemic on November 23, 1813 • Richard Wagner died February 13, 1883 due to a heart attack.

  3. His Inspirations • Robert Schumann Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart • Felix Mendelssohn • Johann Sebastian Bach – Bach actually lived in the same city as Wagner. Where Bach ended his life, Wagner started his.

  4. Music Studies • Piano lessons from Pastor Wetzel. • Began taking lessons in music theory from Christian Gottlieb Muller. Muller was a conductor in Leipzig.

  5. Early Musical Successes • Between 1829- 1830, composed his first two serious piano sonatas, string quartet, and arranged a piano version of Beethoven’s 9th Symphony. • Two of his concert overtures were being performed during Christmas time. • Between 1833- 1836, he wrote his first two operas.

  6. Contribution to Music • His first “different” opera was Rienzi, which he finished in November of 1840. It was unsuccessful until June of the next year. • Der FliegendeHolländerwas his first successful opera. He combined the German Romanticism with the fury of the sea to create this piece. • This is the prelude to one of his most famous operas.

  7. Why he was important • Without Wagner, operas would not be the same. He was for opera what Beethoven was for symphonies. He took the Baroque style music, and turned it into something dark and beautiful. He was the first to put emotions into the operas, and become successful. He really opened the doors for others to come in and be successful by creating something new and different.
