Who and when was this element discovered?? By a French man named Louis Vaunquelin in 1797
What methods are used to extract this element from nature? A two step process called speciation it performs the extraction with introversion of the two predominant species
Availability, abundance on earth, and where it is found in nature Availability & abundance Where it is found The principle ore is found in nature in places like Zimbabwe, Russia, Turkey, Iran and ect. • The element chromium is 9th most abundant element compound in earths crust • Its abundance is 102 parts per million by weight, 40 parts per million by moles
The properties and characteristics of the element • Chromium has a melting point of 1857+/-20°C, boiling point of 2672°C, specific gravity of 7.18 to 7.20 (20°C), with valences usually 2, 3, or 6. The metal is a lustrous steel-gray color which takes a high polish. It is hard and resistant to corrosion. Chromium has a high melting point, stable crystalline structure, and moderate thermal expansion.
The type of compounds the element forms All compounds of chromium are colored; the most important are the chromates of sodium and potassium and the dichromates and the potassium and ammonium chrome alums. The dichromates are used as oxidizing agents in quantitative analysis, also in tanning leather.Other compounds are of industrial value; lead chromate is chrome yellow, a valued pigment. Chromium compounds are used in the textile industry as mordants, and by the aircraft and other industries for anodizing aluminum.
Common everyday uses of the element Chromium is used to harden steel. It is a component of stainless steel and many other alloys. The metal is commonly used for plating to produce a shiny, hard surface that is resistant to corrosion. Chromium is used as a catalyst. It is added to glass to produce an emerald green color.
How the element impacts your life It is used to beautify the things we wear like rubies, basically jewelry. It also hardens still and we use steel a lot, like in things like cars so it is a very important element.
Amazing facts about the element • Comes from the Greek word for color, chroma. • Chromium was discovered while experimenting with a material known as Siberian red lead, also known as the mineral crocoite (PbCrO4), in 1797. • Chromium forms many colorful compounds that have industrial uses.
Cost to obtain or make the element if available • Cost, pure: $20 per 100g • Cost, bulk: $ per 100g
