Now we must substitute the direct object pronoun for the noun Diana. Diana is 3rd person singular (to her) = lhe Eles escrevem-lhe uma carta.

Regra #1 In an affirmative sentence, the direct object pronoun follows the verb separated by a hypen. Exemplo: Eu dou-te o meu lápis.
Regra #2 The indirect object pronoun precedes the verb without a hypen when the verb is preceded by a negative word, a question word, an adverb, and the conjuntions que and como. Exemplos: Ela nãomedá um lápis. Quemmedá um lápis. Ela diz quemedá um lápis.
***Grammatical Note *** In Portuguese, the indirect object pronoun is usually introduced by the preposition a, often in contraction with the definite articles to form ao, à, aos, às. The indirect object generally comes after the direct object, whereas in English it precedes the direct object.
*** Cultural Note *** In Brazil object pronouns more often precede the verb.
