JAMES HUTTON and CHARLES LYELL • All of these geologic processes are all part of the regular cycle of Earth’s events and occur the same way now as they did in the formation of the Earth • i.e. earthquakes, volcanoes, weathering, etc.
HOW HUTTON and LYELL SHAPED DARWIN’S CONCLUSIONS • Lyell - The world is billions of years old, and Darwin concluded that evolution of species takes a long time to occur • Hutton – These geologic processes affect Earth the same way, then natural selection should also affect Earth’s populations the same way.
JEAN BAPTISTE LAMARCK • Most used body structures develop, and unused structures waste away. • Once structures are modified by use or disuse, they become inherited traits by the offspring.
HOW LAMARCK SHAPED DARWIN’S CONCLUSIONS • The idea of adaptations inspired natural selection. Darwin said that adaptations that help populations increase their fitness are passed on to offspring.
What is “fitness”? • The ability to survive and reproduce
