The basic facts • 4 planes were hijacked on the morning of 9-11 • 2 were flown into the World Trade Center ‘Twin Towers’ in New York • 1 was flown into the Pentagon in Washington DC • 1 crashed in Pennsylvania after the passengers overpowered the hijackers • The operation was planned and carried out by Osama bin Laden’s Al-Qaeda

Flight 11 • American Airlines Flight AA11 • 07.59 : Departed Boston Logan Airport • 08.14 : Failed to respond to FAA order to climb, radio & transponder turned off • 08.20 : Off course radically • 08.21 : Flight attendants telephoned FAA to say plane hijacked, some dead already • 08.28 : Turned towards NYC • 08.46 : Flight 11 hit the WTC North Tower between the 94th and 98th floors.

  7. Initially it seemed like an horrific accident

Flight 175 • United Airlines Flight UA175 • 08.14 : Departed Boston Logan Airport • 08.42 : Radio & transponder turned off – plane veered off course • 08.43 : FAA informed NORAD that Flight 175 had probably been hijacked • 09.03 : Flight 175 hit the WTC South Tower between the 78th and 84th floors

  9. Suddenly what had seemed an awful accident became obviously a deliberate and violent act

Flight 77 • American Airlines Flight AA77 • 08.20 : Departed Washington Dulles Airport • 08.46 : Off course for several minutes • 08.50 : Back on course • 08.56 : Transponder turned off, lost from radar screen • 09.25 : FAA controllers at Dulles saw fast moving plane heading for White House (50 miles away)

  12. 09.25 & 09.30 : Barbara Olson, US TV commentator phones her husband Ted Olson, US Solicitor-General, to say hijackers have told passengers they are all going to die, and that they should say ‘goodbye’ to their families • 09.33 : Crossed the Capitol Beltway • 09.35 : Flew over The Pentagon at 7,000ft – then completed a difficult downward spiral in 2.5 minutes • 09.38 : Flight 77 impacted the West Wall of The Pentagon

  17. Meanwhile back in New York the true horror of the attacks on the Twin Towers unfolded

Within the Towers • Thousands start to flee the buildings down the fire-escape staircases. • Many are trapped on the floors above the impact floors by the fires and intense smoke. • FDNY Firefighters along with Port Authority and NYPD Police Officers enter the base of the Towers and start to ascend the stairs to offer assistance in the evacuation.

  20. Collapse! • 09.59 : The South Tower (WTC-2) collapsed without warning, taking just 10 seconds to descend to the floor. • This was 56 minutes after it was struck by the second plane.

  21. 10.28 : Some one hour and 42 minutes after being struck by the first plane the North Tower (WTC-1) collapsed. • Again it took approximately 10 seconds to fall to ground level.

  22. Firefighters dug for survivors and victims, including their friends and colleagues.

  23. 3. Flight 93 • United Airlines Flight UA93 • 08.42 : Departed Newark Airport, N.J. (41 mins late) • 09.27 : Passenger Tom Burnett calls wife to say plane hijacked • 09.28 : FAA ground control hear shouts and screams • 09.34 : Burnett calls wife – she tells him of WTC attacks • 09.36 : Flight 93 turns towards Washington DC

  24. 09.45 : Burnett calls wife to tell her of plan to overpower hijackers • 09.47 : Passenger Jeremy Glick confirms plan to his wife • 09.57 : Hijacker in cockpit reports fighting in main cabin • 09.58 : Passengers report attempt to seize control • 09.58 : Those on ground hear silence from phones, then mechanical noises, and finally screams • 10.03 : Flight 93 crashes in a field in Shanksville, Pennsylvania

  25. 4. The Consequences • The total death toll is believed to be 2,992: • 265 on board the 4 airliners, including 19 hijackers; • 125 inside The Pentagon; • 2,602 (estimated) inside the World Trade Center; • Including: • 343 FDNY firefighters; • 37 Port Authority Police officers; • 23 NYPD Police officers.
