What is a Region? A region is an area of earth’s surface that shares unifying (the same) physical or cultural characteristics. Regions are used to simplify study and understanding of the world.
Types of Regions: Sahara Desert Region: • Area with arid (desert) climate • Located in northern Africa • Getting bigger due to desertification.
Types of Regions: Taiga Region: • The areas with large coniferous forests • Located in subarctic climates of Canada (North America) and Siberian Russia (Asia)
Types of Regions: Rain Forest Region: • Areas of lush vegetation located in the low latitudes • Found on or near the equator • Most are suffering from deforestation
Types of Regions: Great Plains Region: • Area of grasslands found in the central area of North America • Area of great agricultural activity – The Wheat Belt, Dairy Belt • Where tornado alley is found
Types of Regions: Low Countries Region: • Regions of the world that are either at sea level (0 feet) or below sea level in elevation • Examples: Bangladesh (South Asia) and Netherlands (Europe)
