Section 6.1 (pages 192 to 197) Symbols FOR THE ELEMENTS
Naming Elements • First chemist to report a new element had the right to name it. • Ex 1: The famous Physicists/Chemist Marie Currie discovered polonium. She named it after the country she was born in, Poland. • Ex 2: Uranium was named after Uranus.
Invention of Chemical Symbols • Swedish chemist JonsJakob Berzelius was the 1st to propose the system for naming chemicals in which we still use today.
Universal Symbols • Although the spelling and pronunciation of elements differ from country to country, the symbols used to represent each element does not. • Regardless of where you are in the world, hydrogen is represented by “H” likewise helium by “He”. (refer to table 6.1 on p. 192).
Understanding Chemical Formulas for Compounds • A chemical formulauses symbols and numbers to represent the composition of a pure substance. • Ex: The chemical formula for pure water is H20 meaning that there are 2 hydrogen atoms for every 1 oxygen atom.
Composition of a Molecule • A molecule is the smallest independent unit of a pure substance. They are usually a cluster of atoms bonded together. • Ex: A water molecule (chemical formula: H20) is made up of 3 atoms: 2hydrogen atoms and 1 oxygen atom.
