Linux kernel based and open sourced • Uses Gonk • Linux kernel and HAL • HAL: hardware abstraction layer • Gonk is a device porting layer: an adapter between the hardware and Gecko
Gecko • The Gonk software was paired with the Gecko web browser engine • Gecko’s fuction is to read and render web content (examples: HTML, CSS, XUL, JavaScript)
User Interface: Gaia • The front end of the operating system. • Default apps: • Bluetooth, Browser, Calendar, Camera, Clock, Contacts, Cost Control, Dialer, FL. FM, Gallery, Homescreen, Keyboard, Music, PDF.js, Ringtones, Search, Setringtone, Settings, SMS, System, Video, Wallpaper, and WAPPush.
Downsides • Still being perfected • Multiple app stores • Possibly confusing to new smartphone users
Upside • It is can fit on a small amount of memory • Makes it usable on very cheap phones letting it reach a new group of people who could not afford smart phones before.
