GridPP Prof. David BrittonGridPP Project leader University of Glasgow Oversight Committee Meeting 10th December 2010 IET, Oct 09
Context - I Sergio Bertolucci, CERN’s Director of Research Oversight Committee
Context - II Oversight Committee
UK Performance - I UK a leading contributor GridPP Oversight Committee
UK Performance - II UK CPU Efficiency (average CPU-time/wall-time over all sites) is competitive and above average for all the LHC VOs. GridPP Oversight Committee
RAL Tier-1 Usage Oversight Committee
UK Contributions 86% of the resources delivered to the LHC experiments in 2010 Balanced contributions from the Tier-1 and Tier-2 sites. GridPP Oversight Committee
ProjectMap Q310 GridPP Oversight Committee
ProjectMap stats • Small drop in ‘OK’ metrics in Q310 – but only back to the level of Q110. • Red metrics include delays in disk procurements at T2s, issues at ScotGrid sites, LHCb problems with disk servers and SRMs . • 86% of milestones now complete. GridPP Oversight Committee
Risk register • 5 high risks: • R1: Recruitment and retention and R2: Sudden loss of key staff– issue for SLA staff on fixed-term contracts. • R5: Insufficiently resilient wrt storage. ATLAS and LHCb problems. • R11: Changes to LHC schedule. Possibility of 2012 running. • R27: Uncertain long term funding. Reduced risk but still uncertainty over STFC posts and capital funding. GridPP Oversight Committee
Project Manager Sarah Pearce will leave GridPP at the end of January. To ensure continuity, GridPP proposes to appoint Pete Gronbech (currently SouthGrid Tier-2 coordinator) to a temporary position of Project Manager effective immediately using existing funds available at QMUL for a few months. In parallel, the GridPP4 post of Project Manager will be advertised and to ensure maximum flexibility we request the option of appointing at any GridPP institution (thus possibly transferring funds from QMUL). We believe this plan will ensure the smoothest possible transition and allow us to attract and appoint the best possible candidate. Oversight Committee
Finances - summary GridPP Oversight Committee
Finances: non-staff • FY09 SLA spend is now audited and final. • After the last OC, discussion with STFC resulted in lower T1 hardware reduction, due to increased resource allocation. New total T1 hardware budget for FY10 is £1.38m. • T1 hardware procurements on track. CPU and disk costs higher than estimated, but should be within budget if T10KC tape drives become available as expected. • Second round of T2 hardware grants all issued. • Procurements based on FY10 grants are underway, and much of the hardware is now installed. • FY10 travel costs expected to be within budget: some uncertainty due to SSC. GridPP Oversight Committee
Finances: staff costs • Not possible to give detailed SLA staff cost outturn because of uncertainties in SSC figures. Expected to be close to the allocation. • Note staff costs increased in FY10 due to higher employer’s superannuation payments. • Bridging funds for Dissemination Officer (WP G) no longer required. • £11.4k for R-GMA transition funding in WP G. 0.25FTE staff for 6 months, ended in September 2010. GridPP Oversight Committee
Staffing Staff effort delivered to GridPP in Q1/Q2 FY2010 • 105% of expected funded effort delivered in FY010, plus 16.9 FTE of unfunded effort. • Increased funded effort is to compensate for late recruitment or staff transitions earlier in the project • Staff turnover at Tier-2s has seen several new staff starting. GridPP Oversight Committee
Tier-1 DM & BC • A system is now in place that builds on previous experience. • It is tuned to the “slow-moving” disaster that we experience most often… • …but can be applied equally to “classic” disasters. • By triggering early and often, it is exercised regularly. • It is more about the process of disaster management rather than about detailed scenario-planning, though explicit contingency plans exists. • It tries to avoid duplication of, and interference with, existing plans and processes, but links to them. • Business continuity is being addressed on a service-by-service basis and by the (limited) development of the old ATLAS building. Oversight Committee
Conclusion GridPP, and WLCG as a whole, got through the first year of data taking amazingly well, a fact that was recognised at the highest levels. However, there have been challenges and lots of hard work. The GridPP3 project is on-course to reach a successful conclusion in March 2011. The GridPP4 project has been accepted and preliminary funding established. The future continues to hold financial and technical challenges. GridPP Oversight Committee
