Peer Pressure • Influences how you think, feel & act. • You behave & act positively or negatively • Develop strategies (plan) 2 accept or refuse.
Positive Peer Pressure • Participate in a cleanup campaign • Helps community by providing a cleaner environment • Volunteer 2 serve food at a homeless shelter • Work at a Special Olympics event • U can 2 a role model 4 others. • U don’t participate in tobacco, alcohol or drugs.
Negative Peer Pressure • Pressure U 2 take part in negative activities w/negative consequences. • Cliques disrespectful 2 outsider • Can harass or annoy others • May lead 2 name calling, teasing or bullying • Behave against UR Values • May try 2 manipulate U.
Figure 12.1Common Methods of Manipulation • Mocking or teasing in mean or hurtful ways • Using “guilt trips” 2 get desired results • Bargaining - offering 2 make a deal 2 get what U wants • Using flattery or praise 2 influence ano/person • Bribing - promising money or favors • Making threats – promising violence or some oTr negative consequence • Using blackmail – threatening 2 reveal some embarrassing or damaging information if T person does not do what is asked.
Resisting Negative Peer Pressure • Peer Pressure lasts throughout UR life • Friends & Co-workers • Some decision seriously impact UR life • Getting into a car w/people who R drinking • Make friends w/people who share UR values & interest. • Friends who respect health/well being • U may appear uncool or jeopardize a friendship 4 refusing 2 participate in risky behaviors. • Respect yourself T stand by UR values
Assertive Refusal • Stand up 4 UR rights in a firm positive way. • State UR position • Stand UR ground • Acknowledge rights of oTrs
Refusal Skills • Communication Strategies (plan) 2 help U say no. • Three step process • State UR position positively & firmly by saying NO. • Use Figure 12.2 body language techniques. • Suggest alternatives • Stand your ground. – use strong body language, maintain eye contact or remove yourself from T situation.
