Video Partner-Work Questions Directions: Answer the following questions in the next 5 minutes with your seat partner. Use your lecture or video notes to help you, and be ready to share your answers with the rest of class. 1. Which layer is made out of melted rock? 2. Which layer is the thickest? 3. Which layer is the thinnest? 4. Which layer is made out of liquid metal? 5. Which layer is made out of solid metal? 6. Which layer is the hottest? 7. Which layer is the coolest? Exit Ticket • Draw and map the 4 layers of the earth in the correct order. • List 1 characteristic about each layer. Layers: Inner Core Outer Core Crust Mantle Objective: Describe the layers of the earth, including the crust, mantle, outer core, and inner core.
Closing • Back to our original question: If you started digging towards China, what would you find along the way? What would the inside of the earth look like? Did our answer change? Objective: Describe the layers of the earth, including the crust, mantle, outer core, and inner core.
Tuesday Warm Up • Which layer of the Earth do we live on? What is it made out of? • Which layer of the Earth is the thickest? • What element makes up most of the Inner Core? (Hint: It’s a metal)
Partner Work List the materials earth was made up of originally (pre-humans, pre-dinosaurs, pre-life) - Hint: Think of what you learned about earth’s layers yesterday!
Density Demonstration While watching, remember: - When earth began, it was entirely liquid So, how do you think earth’s layers are organized and why?
Two types of Crust Oceanic crust- layer of thin crust, that is underwater (oceans and seas). Continental crust- thick crust that rises above the ocean (mountains and land).
Crust • Continental Crust is 30-50 km thick • Oceanic Crust is 5-10 km thick
Mantle • It is about 2900 km wide-> thickest layer • 500˚C-4000˚C
Outer Core • It is about 2300 km wide • 4400˚C-6100˚C
Inner Core • The reason it is solid is due to the high pressure put on it from the outside layers. • 7000˚C-8000˚C • Its Diameter (width) is about 2400 km.
Lithosphere and Asthenosphere Lithosphere: the solid part of the crust and the very top of the mantle. Asthenosphere: hotter, softer layer of rock on which the lithosphere sits • The Asthenosphere is neither solid or liquid. It is like a hot thick paste: like tar.
