WASHINGTON CORRELATOR UPDATE KERRY KINGHAM Washington Correlator U.S. Naval Observatory
Current Status • 16-station Mark 4 correlator with 8 Station Units • Primary mission remains rapid processing • IVS-INTENSIVES • IVS-R4 • CRF, TRF, APSG • CONT, etc • 3rd HVAC rebuild actually works! • Finally controls humidity for (obsolete) tape drives • Kept humidity under control during a major water leak
Current Status (continued) • Staff • VLBI Scientist • VLBI Scientist backup (part-time) • Correlator Manager • 5 operators/logistics • 80 hours of processing per week • Reduced from 136 hours/week • Still keeping up with processing
Progress • Mark 5 • 8 operational Mark5A playbacks • 4 working tape drives (as long as they don’t break) • Almost all Mark5 processing • DSN, Yellowknife, Simeiz, etc. still using tape • Processing Factors reduced dramatically • R4 = 0.9 (formerly 1.5) • T2 = 3.5 (formerly 5-6) • C05 = 3.25 (estimated 4.5) • Unattended operation
Large Experiments • T2: expanded up to 16 stations • Startup could have been better • Present processing much smoother • software improvements • management improvements • CONT05 • Would still be being processed if not for Mark 5 • PF of 3.2 • Good test of Correlator procedures and software! Progress (continued)
Progress (continued) • eVLBI • Operations: • Wettzell sends daily Intensive observations to ISI-E • Pickup and transport to USNO every 2 days • Kokee ships disks which arrive in 2 days • 1 to 2 days saved • Problems: • Success-rate 85% • Multiple problems, no quick fix • Transport • Network problems • Upgrades at ISI-E • etc
