  1. Early Earth Earth and Fossils

  2. Week 26 Objective/Agenda 3.11.2013 Bell Ringer: Bell Ringer: Describe how you think Earth was created. What tools would you need to prove it? (2 sentences minimum OR NO STAMP! ONLY 1 CHANCE!!!) • Bell Ringer • TURN IN WEEK 25 BRS! • SECTION 14.1 (PACKET) STAMP 2. Notes Objective: IWBAT: Explain how scientists use fossils to provide evidence of change on Earth. 3. Group 4. Independent 5. Exit Ticket

  3. C.H.A.M.P.s Conversation- it is expected you remain silent during notes Help- Raise your hand for help Activity- Notes on early Earth and fossils Movement- It is expected you remain seated during lecture Participation- It is expected that you take notes and answer questions

  4. Explain why we care about early earth?? Knowing the history of Earth and understanding ideas about how life began provides background for an understanding of the theory of evolution.

  5. What Was Earth Like A Long Time Ago?

  6. Describe what early earth was like Earth was very HOT! With Erupting volcanoes and had Crashing Meterotites

  7. Life Did Not Exist on Early Earth All the gases from volcano eruptions helped to form early earth. The gases likely found include carbon dioxide and nitrogen. Watervaporswere also present, but NO FREE OXYGEN.

  8. Summarize when life first began About 4.4 billion years ago, the Earth may have cooled enough for the water to start to condense. Millions of years of rainstorms with lightening led to what is now our oceans. It is thought by some scientists that life began in the oceans between 3.9 and 3.4 billion years ago.

  9. Is It All Just A Story? Scientists cannot be sure exactly how Earth was formed. Scientists use fossils to study ancient species and gain insight on how Earth used to be. A fossil is evidence of an organism that lived long ago It is thought by some scientists that life began spontaneously Paleontologists are the detectives that look at fossils to understand events that happened long ago.

  20. Amber

  21. Group • Use the problem solving lab and discuss your answers with your group. • Be prepared to share. • Ferns= small plants *Temperate= warm • You will have 2 minutes for each statement to determine whether or not it sounds reasonable.

  22. Statement 1 Fern fossils in Antarctica are of plants could withstand freezing temperatures

  23. Statement 2 The ferns in Antarctica may have been mutated forms of ferns that grew in warm climates

  24. Statement 3 The temperature of Earth may have been much warmer millions of years ago than it is today.

  25. Independent- TURN IN WK 25 BRs! Answer your questions and summarize your notes. Remember, independent practice is done quietly FINISH 14.1 Packets!!!
