  2. AIPLA Rapid Response Team To respond quickly to issues arising in media Address misinformation and/or derogatory views with regard to intellectual property Submit op-ed pieces or letters in response Seeking to correct misinformation and inform public of benefits of IP

Biotech Examples Oct 2011: NPR Fresh Air piece on Harriet Washington’ book, Deadly Monopolies: The Shocking Corporate Takeover of Life Itself—and the Consequences for Your Health and Our Medical Future Brought to our attention in early November; asked to write a “short & snappy response”. Wrote up bullet points in response; submitted to Team leaders next day; written up following day as letter requesting on-air reply or opportunity to address in future program as part of panel. Letter went to NPR 3 days later (no response).

  4. Current Issues • Mayo v. Prometheus • Myriad Genetics • Public-friendly “amicus” • Propose guidance • Prepare to respond to CAFC/SCt

  5. Future Plans • Web site resources • Post articles/commentary for Rapid Response Team to address • Share materials already drafted • White papers (proactive and pre-vetted) • Guidance for discussion and rebuttals • Coordinate with: • Public Education Committee • Biotech Committee’s Diagnostics & Gene Patenting Subcommittee
