What is Juneteenth? • Commutates the day that slave in Texas obtained their freedom from slavery, that had been officially abolished by the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation. • Although the E.P. was put into effect on January 1st 1863, it wasn’t until June 19th 1865, when Union troops arrived to Galveston Island and made them enforce the proclamation.
