  1. Fractions How much pie do I get?

  2. Whole pizza A fraction of a pizza A fraction is a PART of a WHOLE

  3. Equal parts Unequal parts But fractions are not just any old part of a whole, they areEQUAL parts

  4. The key to fractions is figuring out how many equal parts the whole was cut into and then comparing that with how many parts we are interested in.

  5. Here the whole was cut into 4 equal parts. We get to eat 1 of them. How do we write the fraction that is the part we get to eat? 1 2 4 3

  6. Next, write the number of pieces you get to eat up here. We draw a short line like this: And there you have our fraction 1 2 Then below the line we write the total number of equal pieces we have. 4 3 1 _____ 4

  7. 3 3 4 1 2 4 3 If I tell you that you get of the pizza, it means you get of the 4 pieces

  8. The top number -- the number of pieces we are looking at -- is the 3 4 The bottom number -- the number of pieces the whole was cut into -- is called the These numbers have special names. NUMERATOR DENOMINATOR Again, the top number is the number we are looking at, like the number we get to eat, And the bottom number tells us how many pieces there are in all!

  9. 2 2 31,987 587 393 31,987 587 393 = 1 3 = = (when written as a fraction) or or 1 square A whole 1 3 or Any fraction where the numerator and denominator are the same! 354 and all = 1 So , , , 354
