Course Review Reflection – Pick 1 Course Job-Aids, Performance Support, Prompting Tools Increase Remembering Decrease Forgetting Determining if learners were asked to use job aids, checklists, etc., during the training in the same way they might use them on the job. Considering if the exercises, simulations, etc., during the training reflected the kinds of real-world situations that learners will face on job. Determining if any job aids, checklists, or other prompting mechanisms were utilized in the training. Determining whether more than 40% of the training was devoted to simulation-like practice or realistic hands-on practice? Reviewing whether the job aids, checklists, etc. are used later on the job. Determining if the key concepts/skills were repeated at least 3 times & spaced over at least 30 hours. Engagement & Satisfaction Using smile sheets during or at end of training, asking learners whether the course had value, whether it was engaging, whether they were satisfied, etc. Considering if training could have been replaced entirely with prompting mechanisms (performance support). Observing training from the “back of training room”, looking for learner engagement, level of interactivity, and similar. Determining whether reminders of key content were provided after training. After-Training Follow-Through Evaluation to Improve Learning Approaches Gauging the reputation of the course out in the organization. Asking learners’ managers how well the learner is applying the learning. Reviewing actual on-the-job performance data that is related to the targeted skills of the course (not learner opinions). Trainers reviewing results of in-training exercises, case studies, discussions, etc., to determine whether learners understand the key concepts. Determining if learners are getting the support they need to apply the learning. Finding out how successful learners were in applying what they learned to their jobs. Providing decision-making exercises, skills tests, or simulations after a day or more since the concepts/skills were taught. Providing delayed smile sheets weeks after training. Determining whether learners have coaches on-the-job to help them learn more or apply the learning. Providing assessments to determine whether learners remember concepts & skills weeks after training ends. 3 points if targeted, 1 point if considered
