  5. What does it mean to be a Democrat? • The longest standing political party in the U.S. • Also known as liberals • Government should have a role in citizens lives

  6. What does it mean to be a Republican? • Also known as conservatives • - Government should not be in citizens lives

  8. Republic • Republic has representatives to speak for the public. • Afghanistan is an example of this type of government. • Presidency is independent of the legislature

  9. Monarchy • Usually inherited authority • Vatican City is an example of a Monarchy.

  10. Monarchy Cont. • The United Kingdom is also a Monarchy. • Known as Kings and Queens • Children take over after their parents usually

  11. Dictatorship • The Ruler is an absolute dictator.

  12. Dictatorship Cont. • One leader who wants to “change the world” • Hitler is an example of a dictator -World War II

  13. LEVELS OF GOVERNMENTIn The United States! • Local- The government that works with a specific county/area.

  16. Legislative Branch • The power to pass, amend and repeal laws • Makes laws • US House of Representative and Senate

  17. Who Is In Our Legislative Branch? • GOVERNOR: Mike Rounds

  18. Executive Branch • Carries out the laws • Appoints the heads of agencies • The president and vice president are part of this branch of government.

  20. Judicial Branch • Administers Justice • Interprets Laws • Appointed by the president

  21. Who Is In Our Judicial Branch? • Chief Justice: John Roberts
