  3. Overview (What is VoIP?) • Voice over Internet Protocol • Involves the delivery of voice information over • IP based networks. i.e. Internet • Used to transmit voice, fax, data and multimedia all in one network

How does VoIP Work? • Sends voice information in discrete digital packets rather than sending it through the public switched telephone network (PSTN). • Takes an analogue voice signal and converts it into a digital format so that it can be delivered over an IP network. i.e. Internet. • By using a router-based gateway, a PC-based gateway, a PBX-based gateway and others it can perform the conversion from an analogue signal to a digital format.
