How does VoIP Work? • Sends voice information in discrete digital packets rather than sending it through the public switched telephone network (PSTN). • Takes an analogue voice signal and converts it into a digital format so that it can be delivered over an IP network. i.e. Internet. • By using a router-based gateway, a PC-based gateway, a PBX-based gateway and others it can perform the conversion from an analogue signal to a digital format.
Detailed Explanation • PSTN (Public Switched Telephone Network) • POTS based on Circuit Switching • Today it is out of date • ISP’s pay for long distance access • VoIP takes advantage of this
Detailed Explanation • IP telephony • Packet switching using H.323 Standard • Bypass the PSTN through a Gateway • Search Function • Connection • Digitizing • Demodulation • Compression • Decompression and Remodulation
Advantages • No extra Phone Charge • Allows for multiple connections over a single line ex. Voice, fax, data, video. • Multiple users at the same time
Disadvantages • Initial set up cost • Quality issues • Compatibility issues
