  1. Figure 1. Configuration of one set of small plots in a field with legumes planted in a mixture with a grass or other non-N-fixing plant. In fields with a legume monoculture only two plots are needed, the middle plot (mixture) is not included. The non-legume plant serves as the reference for calculations of total N derived from biological N fixation in the legume.
