DO NOW • What is a frame of reference and relative motion?
Frame of Reference • In order to describe motion a frame of reference is needed • A frame of reference is a system of objects that are not moving with respect to one another. • How fast something is moving is dependent on the frame of reference • Relative motion is movement in relation to a frame of reference
Distance • Distance is the length of the path between two points. • The SI unit is meters and large distances use kilometers
Displacement • Is the direction from the starting point and the length of a straight line from the starting point to the end point. • It is good to use displacements for directions • You may need to combine displacements which can be done using vector addition since displacement is an example of a vector.
Combining Displacements Along A Straight Line • If in the same direction you add them • If in opposite directions you subtract them
Displacement Not Along A Straight Line • When the vectors have different directions they may be combined by graphing. • The straight line from the start to the end point is called the resultant vector and that is the displacement.
Recap • Displacement is….. • Direction from the starting point and the length of a straight line from the starting point to the ending point • Distance is…… • The length of the path between two points.
