  2. Lino plate The traditional base for a linocut print is made from carved linoleum. Some artists have switched over to other materials that mimic the consistency of linoleum. There are other bases as well that are softer or harder than linoleum that create a different effect when applied to a surface.

  3. Lino Carving Tools Linoleum is soft enough to cut into, and specific tools are used to create a variety of grooves. The basic edges are curved to cut into and remove material at the same time. Most tools come in a kit that includes an assortment of carving heads and a handle. The different shapes can provide a range of lines from thick to thin, or shallow to deep. An artist may switch heads to better control details or remove a large amount of material at one time.

  4. Ink Ink is available specifically for linocuts. It is easily spread so that it can be applied with a roller or “brayer”. The ink is first spread on a separate surface and rolled to a proper consistency that is not too wet or dry. Inks may be mixed to create interesting colors, or multiple colors can be applied to the same brayer to create a rainbow of colors. This can create some soft blending effects if the colors are rolled appropriately. The ink can easily be washed off the brayers and plate once it is finished being used.

  5. Brayers Brayers are soft rubber rollers used in the printmaking process. Brayers come in a variety of widths and can accommodate different sizes of linocuts. The brayer helps to spread ink consistently onto the surface of the plate. This helps the artist have more control so that they avoid missing areas or applying too much ink. Brayers can also be used to press the plate onto the printed surface. By rolling over the back of the linocut, the artist can create a more balanced press of their image.

  6. Plexiglas Plexiglas is often the surface on which ink is applied and then rolled out to create a consistent layer on the brayer. This is an important preparation step to ensure that once the brayer is applied to the plate it has an even coating of ink to spread. This helps to avoid streaking or speckles of ink. The Plexiglas is also easy to wash and can be reused for the next print.
