  1. Curriculum Design and Development Course Workshop 3 – Determine Training Equipment, Facilities and Staffing Requirements

  2. TrainingResources Resources required to support a training course: • Training equipment • Workshops/laboratories • Training staff Community Services and Health Industry Skills Council www.cshisc.com.au

  3. Objectives of Presentation • Prepare list of training equipment needed to support training course. • Plan training facilities • Identify new teaching staff required

  4. Part I Identify and Specify Training Equipment

  5. Training Equipment List • Training Equipment • Training Units •  Hand tools •  Simulators •  Furniture Categories :

  6. How to Identify Training Equipment • From Competency Standard • From Curriculum Outline • From Training Specifications (if ready)

  7. Quantity Needed Quantity depends on: • Class size • Learners to equipment ratio

  8. Specifications Specifications should include: • The technical name of the item • The technical specifications • Quantity needed (based on declared class size and learner to equipment ratio) • Estimated unit price • Estimated total price

  9. DO’s • Determine utilisation rate (how often it is used?) • Keep name and specs neutral ( not associated with any product found in the market) • Specs should be clear (prevent misinterpretation) • Specs should give a range of sizes (will attract more offers during purchase))

  10. Utilisation Rate Utilisation Rate = (AXB) ÷ (CXDXE) X 100% A = Curriculum requiring use of the equipment B = Number of learners using equipment C = Maximum possible hours which the equipment can be used D Quantity of equipment to be provided E Number of learners sharing equipment as a group A, B, C, and D are based on usage in a training year

  11. Discussion Suggested topics: • Current system of identifying and specifying training equipment • Areas that can be improved in writing specs • Endorsement and approval process

  12. Learning Activity 1 Prepare Training Equipment List Time: 1 hour This assignment may be done as group work Refer to instructions in the Notes

  13. Learning Activity 2 Calculate Utilisation Rate of Training Equipment Time: 1 hour This assignment may be done as group work Refer to instructions in the Notes

  14. Thank You

  15. Part II Identify and Specify Training Facilities

  16. Training Facilities These are: • Workshops • Laboratories • Project rooms and • Classrooms used regularly for training purpose.

  17. Identify Facility • From Competency Standard • From Curriculum outline • From Training Spec (if ready)

  18. Floor Space Required • Floor space costs money • Determine space accurately • Check similar existing facilities • Study examples from external source

  19. Calculation of Floor space Floor space may be determined from following data : A: area of one item of training equipment/furniture B: area of working space per learner (say 1 sq m) C: number of learners per equipment/furniture D: number of training equipment/furniture

  20. Special Provisions • Power Supply • Safety measures • Toxic waste disposal •  Ventilation • Lighting • Fire Fighting/ Prevention Facilities •  Heavy machinery and heavy engineering work • Fixtures • Climate-controlled systems

  21. Discussion Suggested topics: • Current system of identifying and specifying training facilities • Challenges faced • Improvements that can be considered • Endorsement and approval process

  22. Learning Activity 3 Calculate Floor Area of a Training Facility Time: 1 hour for group work  Participants will form groups of up to 10 persons to complete this learning activity. The group will elect its leader, recorder and presenter. Refer to instructions in the Notes

  23. Thank You

  24. Part III Staff Requirements and Development

  25. Staffing Size to Teach Course • Curriculum hours • Class size – practical/theory • Instructor teaching load per week Factors to consider :

  26. Retrain Existing Instructors Determine: • Their previous training and work experience • Their present level of competence and the gap between the existing skills and the expected skills required by the new course • Attitude • Whether the staff identified is willing to take new responsibilities and retraining

  27. Recruit New Instructors Determine: • Technical qualifications • Pedagogic qualifications • Industrial work experience • Teaching experience

  28. Discussion Suggested topics • Desired profile of an instructor (qualifications, experience and …) • Areas that may be considered for improvement on staffing

  29. Learning Activity 4 Identify challenges in determining the resources required to support implementation of a new course • Time: 2 hours for group work •  Participants will form groups of up to 10 persons to complete this learning activity. • The group will elect its leader, recorder and presenter. • Refer to instructions in the Notes.

  30. Thank You
