  6. Policy Framework TEN-T Guidelines • Approved in 1996 • Modified in 2004, to reflect priorities of the White Paper on Transports (2001).

  13. Priority Projects are the back-bone of European Inland Navigation connecting the basins of Danube, Rhine, Meuse and Seine But not the only cases where Inland Navigation can be succesful

  14. Inland Navigation is also important when it is integrated in an intermodal chain Po river and the canals are a good example of this, linking Short Sea Shipping to rail and road intermodal ports

  16. The Way Forward • Inland Waterways are an asset for the European development. • Can contribute to reliefe heavily congested areas and to develop peripheral regions of the Union. • Certainly an asset but also a challenge, it has to be developed in respect of the environment

  18. The Way Forward The European Commission has nominated Mrs. Karla Peijs, former Dutch Transport Minister, European Coordinator for the development of Inland Waterways Transport. Nature of controversies and bottlenecks may range from Environment, Economics, Social, Political and …..Emotional reasons

  19. In Conclusion • Strong commitment of European institutions to support sustainable Inland Waterway through Naiades and TEN-T funding • Nomination of a Coordinator to tackle controversial issues, to make best use of experience and promote inland navigation

Coordinator’s and European Commission activities are possible with the contribution of all parties. • Development of Inland Waterway and Environmental Protection have to go hand in hand. • A sustainable Inland Navigation takes into account all the basin development in terms of social, environmental and economical factors.
