  2. Origins of Western Political Thought Greeks • Direct Democracy - A government in which the people hold ruling power and directly make all the decisions. • Legislator/Assembly met several times a month to decide important issues. • All citizens should take part in society.

  3. Origins of Western Political ThoughtGreeks (Continued) • Jury - Group of people sworn to make decisions in a legal case. • Jurors chosen by lot and served one year. • Could be hundreds of jurors.

  4. Origins of Western Political ThoughtGreeks (continued) • Philosophers • Aristotle • Rule of Law - Written laws, made by established procedures, are the guidelines for the government’s power. • No one is above the law. (Rulers are subject to the law.) • Reason should guide us.

Origins of Western Political Thought Romans • Republic - System of government in which officials are chosen by the people. • Would keep individual from gaining too much power. • Elected officials the business of government and commanded armies. • Common people later got rights to elect officials.

Origins of Western Political Thought Romans (Continued) • Written-Public Code of Laws • A common set of laws written so all citizens can read. • Citizens can appeal or veto unfair laws. • Laws could be the same for all provinces. • Example: Justinian Code • Justice Through the Law • Influenced today’s legal code

  7. Origins of Western Political Thought Romans (Continued) • Judicial Interpretation (Judicial Review) • Judges analyze and clarify the law. • Interpretations become part of the law. • Example: The Justinian Code was a collection of laws and legal writings of Roman judges.

  9. Origins of Western Political Thought Christianity • Equality and Dignity of All • All people are treated the same. • “Love your neighbor as yourself.” • All people have value and should be respected. • Jesus welcomed all including the poor and oppressed.
