Post War • After war worked as a reporter in Chicago • In 1921, moved to Paris, friends with F. Scott Fitzgerald (friendship soured) • In 1927, returned to U.S. and settled in Key West, FL-wrote A Farewell to Arms there in 1929-it was very successful
Drinking Problems • Was an alcoholic which led to hearing voices • Taught his 2nd son, Patrick, to drink at age 12. • His 3rd son, Gregory (Gloria), became a transvestite and died at age 69 in FL women’s prison • Drinking led to cirrhosis of the liver
The Last Years • Old Man and the Sea published in Life in 1959 • 1960, treated for depression in MN • Given shock therapy during this time • On July 2, 1961, at his home in Ketchum, ID, he killed himself with his favorite shotgun
