  2. History of Halloween The celebration of Halloween today is a mixture of different rituals and celebrations: Celtic, non-Christian, Christian celebrations of All Saint’s Day,Irish and American traditions.

  3. History of Halloween The earliest origins date back to the Celts,who lived in Scotland.On October 31,they celebrated what they called Samhain (pronounced /sɑ:wɪn/). It was the end of the harvest season and the beginning of cold,dark winters.

  4. History of Halloween As Christianity spread,the church combined the non-Christian celebration with their own celebration of All Saint’s Day (also called All Hallow’s Day, celebrated on November 1st).

  5. History of Halloween To celebrate all Saint’s Day,young men went door-to-door asking for food for the poor. This is where Trick-or Treatcomes from!

  6. Trick-or-treat, also known as guising, is what children do on Halloween. They go from house to house in costumes, asking for treats such as candy with the question, "Trick or treat?”

  7. Irish people used to carve out turnips and put candles inside and use them as lanterns. When they came to America , they noticed there weren’t many turnips, but lots of pumpkins , so they used them instead.
