Why Does My Child Have To Take the NJ ASK? • To see how well your child is performing in school • To compare how your school/district measures up to other districts in NJ (New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards) • To point out areas of strengths and weaknesses
Who Takes the NJ ASK, and How is it Scored? • All 3rd and 4th grade students in New Jersey • Advanced Proficient, Proficient, Partially Proficient
When is the NJASK? • Week of May 7-11, 2012 Reading & Writing – Monday, Tuesday Math – Wednesday, Thursday Science – Friday (grade 4 only)
NJ ASK - Overview • The NJ ASK is designed to give your school information about how well students are performing according to the NJ State Standards. • The test reflects what students should know and be able to do at a certain grade level.
Math Assessment - Overview • The NJ ASK has two major types of questions. • Multiple choice (MC) – students are asked to choose one correct answer from among four choices.
Open-Ended Questions • Open-Ended (OE): these questions require a written response • Open-ended responses have higher point value • Calculators will be permitted only on certain parts (students will be informed when to use them)
Sample Open-ended Math Item Gr. 3 Standard 4.4.3.C.2 Represent all possibilities for a simple counting situation in an organized way and draw conclusions from this situation. Item: A lunch menu has 3 beverage selections: water, juice, and milk. The menu also offers 2 sandwich selections: turkey and peanut butter. How many different meals of one beverage and one sandwich are possible? (answer 6)
Sample Open-ended Math Response Grade 4 Standard 4.1.4.B.4 Use and efficient and accurate paper and pencil procedure for computation with whole numbers-addition with three digit numbers. Item: Inez has a toy car collection. She has 55 red cars, 67 blue cars, and 123 orange cars. How many cars does she have in all? (answer 245)
Reading Assessment - Overview • Students read three passages including literature and informational selections. • Multiple choice questions • Open-ended questions (higher point value)
Writing Assessment - Overview • Speculative Prompt - students are given scenario and write a story. • Explanatory Prompt – students are given a topic or poem. They write a composition to explain or describe experiences or ideas.
Sample Speculative Prompt When the school bell rang, Katie and Pablo grabbed their books and raced out of the classroom. They had been looking forward to this afternoon all week long. Today they were going to go on an adventure. Write a story about the adventure Katie and Pablo had after they left school.
Sample Explanatory Prompt Most people have a special activity or hobby that they enjoy. Some people collect things while others like to read or play games. What activity do you like to do? Write a composition describing what you enjoy doing. Explain why that activity is special to you.
Science Assessment Overview- Gr. 4 • Assessment includes four parts • Multiple choice questions – 1 point • Open-ended questions – 3 points • Life Science 40% • Physical Science 30% • Earth Science 30%

Test Anxiety • What Should I Do if My Child Has Test Anxiety? • Communicate- talk openly with your child about the test • Motivate- your child can do it! • Praise- no matter what, praise your child for preparing for this rigorous test • Encourage- tell your child that you are very proud of him/her • Optimistic thoughts- remain positive about the test. Do not say anything negative about it. • Relaxation techniques- concentrate on breathing and a place that makes your child feel warm and cozy…refocus
On Test Day • Early to bed….early to rise! No late nights that week! • Serve a HEALTHY breakfast- energy food (cereal, fruit, and eggs are great) • Have your child wear comfortable clothing • Promptness…GET YOUR CHILD TO SCHOOL ON TIME!!!! This will allow him/her to have time to unwind with classmates…very important!! • Encouragement- a kiss and a hug go a long way!!
