Saraswati Tirtha Pehowa, Kurukshetra Location: 26 km from Kurukshetra Brief History & Cultural Importance: References to this tirtha occur in the epic and Puranas. According to Mahabharata Matinara, a king of Puru lineage performed many sacrifices here, at the bank of Saraswati. Pleased with the sacrifices performed by the king, Saraswati adopted him as her husband. Mahabharata further states that after crossing the river SaraswatiPandavas had entered into the KamyakVana, a prominent forest situated in the land of Kurukshetra. Asim- Krishna, a descendent of the Pandavas had also performed a long satra sacrifice here on the bank of river Saraswati at Prithudaka. Saraswatitirtha of Pehowa (Prithudaka) since time immemorial is famous for its shradha ceremonies. Near the eastern entry gate to the tirtha a sand stone doorjamb of C. 9th-10th century A.D is placed in a modern shrine dedicated to Radha Krishna. An inscription of the time of Pratihara king Mihirbhoja ( A D 836-890) dated 276 years of Harsha era, i.e. 882 A D now fixed on the facades of Garibnath temple in the vicinity of the tirtha, records the horse fair of Prithudaka. It speaks of an agreement of traders for imposing voluntary taxes for the purpose of perpetual religious endowments.
