  1. Argumentative Essay

  2. You are required to copy down the material in black in this PowerPoint • This material will make writing this essay much easier for you

  3. Requirements • 5 paragraphs – Intro, Body 1, Body 2, Counterclaim (Body 3), Conclusion • Intro – 5-6 sent. • Body par’s – at least 8 sent. • Conclusion 4-5 sent. • 2 quotes for each Body Par. • Quotations from at least 2 different articles • NEVER USE “I” • OR “ME” OR “MY/MINE” • OR “IN MY OPINION”

  4. What are we writing about? Topic: • The pros (positive) and cons (negative) of artificial intelligence • You have to take a stand – you’re either FOR or AGAINST – before you start writing • Your essay will either: • reflect how you think A.I. is GOOD and talk about the pros of it • Reflect how you think A.I. is BAD and talk about the cons of it

  5. Where do my quotes come from? • We will read 3 articles on artificial intelligence: • “Pros and Cons of Artificial Intelligence” by Andy Patrizio • “Three Ways Artificial Intelligence is Good for our World” by Jillian Richardson • “Four Things Everyone Should Fear About Artificial Intelligence and the Future” by Jonathan Vanian • Your quotations will come from at least 2 of these articles

  6. Let’s read the 1st article • As we read “Pros and Cons…” you need to mark any material you think you could use for your argument • Highlight any pros you see (positive stuff about A.I.) • Underline any cons you see (negative stuff about A.I.) • Remember, the more of these you find now, the less you have to worry about looking for later when you write

  7. Pick a side • Now that you’ve read the first article, decide on which side YOU will take with your essay – pros or cons • Do that now

  8. 2nd & 3rd article • As you read the other two articles on your own, mark any material you think you could use for your argument • Highlight any pros you see (positive stuff about A.I.) • Underline any cons you see (negative stuff about A.I.) You have 15 minutes to read and mark your articles

  9. Reminders About Quotes • Always put article titles in quotation marks (“”). Don’t underline them • When you refer to the author the FIRST time (so in the intro), you use their full name • Every time after that, you refer to them by just their last name • NEVER refer to the author by their first name alone – you guys aren’t friends

  10. You have 20 minutes to write Intro Intro Paragraph Guidelines • Introduce your topic – artificial intelligence – and whether it’s a good or bad thing • Remember to be straight and to the point here • Mention the article titles and authors’ names and briefly summarize what they were about in one sentence each • Last sent. is thesis: Sample --- As these articles show, artificial intelligence is (a benefit/a drawback) because ________________ (3 reasons). • 5-6 sentences total • (0 quotes in intro)

  11. You have 35 minutes to write BP1 Body Par. #1 Guidelines • Tell the main idea of the paragraph in opening sentence • Use a quote to back up your idea & explain its significance in your own words • Use another quote to back up your idea & explain its significance in your own words • (Must have at least 2 quotes in this par.) • Must be at least 8 sentences altogether Remember to introduce your quotes: Example: In the article “Pros and Cons of Artificial Intelligence,” Andy Patrizio says, “ ……………………” Or Patrizio shows this when he says, “…………..”

  12. You have 35 minutes to write BP2 Body Par. #2 Guidelines • Tell the main idea of the paragraph in opening sentence • Use a quote to back up your idea & explain its significance in your own words • Use another quote to back up your idea & explain its significance in your own words • (Must have at least 2 quotes in this par.) • Must be at least 8 sentences altogether Remember to introduce your quotes: Example: In the article “Pros and Cons of Artificial Intelligence,” Andy Patrizio says, “ ……………………” Or Patrizio shows this when he says, “…………..”

  13. You have 45 minutes to write BP3 Counterclaim (BP3) Guidelines • This is where you explain the viewpoint OPPOSITE of yours and explain why you disagree with it • Remember, you have to explain the opposing opinion and then disprove it – otherwise you look like a flip-flopper • Explain opposing viewpoint and back it up with quotations • Explain significance of the quotations • Need 2 quotes; par. Must be at least 8 sentences altogether Remember to introduce your quotes: Example: In the article “Pros and Cons of Artificial Intelligence,” Andy Patrizio says, “ ……………………” Or Patrizio shows this when he says, “…………..”

  14. You have 20 minutes to write Conclusion Conclusion Guidelines • Wrap up your thoughts and stance on the subject quickly and succinctly • Do not waste time repeating yourself • End on a thoughtful note
