What are the busiest airports in Britain? Would you like to travel to Britain by air? Then you will arrive in the southeast where the main passenger ports and airports are situated. Heathrow Airport is the biggest airport in the UK. It is about 20 miles east of London. Gatwick, the second major airport, is about 30 miles to the south. Heathrow has 28 million passengers per year and Gatwick has about 10 million.
There is a lot of traffic in the streets of London: endless lines of buses, cars and taxes. Most of London buses are the famous red double- deckers, that have two platforms (decks) for passengers. There are also green buses, they run from London to the countryside.
The first buses came on the streets of London in 1829. They were buses pulled by horses. The upper deck had no roof. The busconductor gave passengers raincoats and umbrellas if it started raining. • If you want to travel on a London bus, you must first look for a bus stop. When you find it, you must remember to queue up and wait for the bus. English people always do that. • It is difficult for a tourist from Europe to cross the street in London because in Britain the cars there keep to the left, and not to the right as in European countries and in Russia. When English people want to cross the street they must look first to the right and then to the left, while in our country you look first to the left and then to the right. • The traffic lights there are not like it is in Russia. The red light says “Stop”, the green light says “Wait” and only when you see the yellow light, which says “Cross” you may cross the street.
Every year many tourists come to the British capital to see the Tower of London. It was founded by William the Conqueror in the eleventh century and was used by him as a fortress and a palace. Later it was made a prison. At last it was transformed into a tourist attraction, a museum. Now it contains no prisoners, it has the Crown treasures and legends. Since many people were prisoners of the Tower and were killed there, it is not surprising that the Tower has more ghost stories than any other place in Britain. Different people say that the figures of many famous prisoners were seen in the Tower: the two princes who were the sons of King Edward IV, Anne Boleyn, Lady Jane Grey and Others. There have been many reports of strange sounds and invisible (невидимые) persons.
Answer the questions • Who founded the Tower of London? • When was it founded? • What happened to the Tower? First it was… Later… At last… Now…
