Do Now What can you remember about the weather? What happens during a cold front? What do you remember about the weather map shown below?
Announcements • You will not have my class again until Friday. • Good luck with EOGs!
Going back in time… • To weather!
Air Mass __________: a large body of air that has the same properties as the surface over which it develops. 6 air masses effect U.S.
Pressure SystemsAtmospheric Pressure:- caused by air molecules pushing on the Earth’s surface- determined by temperature, density, and water vapor in the air
High Pressure ________________: air flows downward and outward in a clockwise spiral. Brings fair weather – hard for air to rise and form clouds
Low Pressure ______________: air flows upward and inward in a counterclockwise spiral. Brings cloudy weather
Front _______: boundary between two different pressure system.
Warm Front _____________: develops when a less dense warm air mass slides over a descending cold air mass.
Cold Front ____________: cold air mass pushes under a warm air mass and forces the warm air steeply up. Cumulous/cumulonimbus clouds – move slower than warm front
Occluded Front _________________: two cool air masses merge and force warm air upward. Strong winds and heavy precipitation
Stationary Front __________________: pressure differences cause a warm from or a cold front to stop moving. Same place for days – light wind and precipitation across entire front
Thunderstorm _______________: heavy rainfall, lightning flashes, thunder, and maybe hail. Warm moist air forced upward rapidly, cools, condenses – cumulonimbus cloud
Air builds up + and – electrical charges; current flows between opposite charges and __________ is produced. lightning
Rapid heating of air around a lightning bolt creates _________. thunder
Tornado __________: violent whirling wind that moves in a narrow path over land usually SW to NE.
Wind Shear _____________: wind moving in different directions, at different speeds, and at different elevations.
Hurricane ___________: large, swirling, low pressure system that forms over tropical oceans. Most powerful storm
Project • In partners, you will be writing a weather report for Charlotte for the weekend.
