Learn how to form and pronounce the future tense of regular verbs in Irish. Add -faidh to broad verbs and -fidh to slender verbs. Also includes examples of asking questions and negating phrases.

Regular Verbs, Future Tense • In the future tense, add either –faidh or –fidh to the root, depending on whether it is broad (such as ól) or slender (such as cuir) • Pronounce it as –ih - ólfaidh [ōl-ih], will drink- glanfaidh [glan-ih], will clean- tógfaidh [tōg-ih], will take- fágfaidh [fawg-ih], will leave- fanfaidh [fahn-ih], will wait
ÓLFAIDH – will drink • Future tense: add –faidh to the verb root ól ólfaidh mé – I will drinkólfaidh tú– you will drinkólfaidh sé – he will drinkólfaidh sí – she will drinkólfaidh muid – we will drinkólfaidh sibh– y’all will drinkólfaidh siad– they will drink
GLANFAIDH – will clean • Past tense: add –faidh to the verb root glanglanfaidh mé– I will cleanglanfaidh tú – you will cleanglanfaidh sé – he will cleanglanfaidh sí – she will cleanglanfaidh muid – we will cleanglanfaidh sibh – y’all will cleanglanfaidh siad – they will clean
TÓGFAIDH – will take • Future tense: add –faidh to the verb root tógtógfaidh mé – I will taketógfaidh tú – you will taketógfaidh sé – he will taketógfaidh sí – she will taketógfaidh muid – we will taketógfaidh sibh – y’all will taketógfaidh siad – they will take
FÁGFAIDH – will leave • Future tense: add –faidh to the verb root fágfágfaidh mé – I will leavefágfaidh tú – you will leavefágfaidh sé – he will leavefágfaidh sí – she will leavefágfaidh muid – we will leavefágfaidh sibh – y’all will leavefágfaidh siad – they will leave
FANFAIDH – will wait • Future tense: add –faidh to the verb root fan fanfaidh mé – I will waitfanfaidh tú – you will waitfanfaidh sé – he will waitfanfaidh sí – she will waitfanfaidh muid – we will waitfanfaidh sibh – y’all will waitfanfaidh siad – they will wait
Ask a question, eclipse the verb! • An ólfaidh sibh anocht? – from ól, “drink”[an ōl-ih shiv anokht]Will y’all drink tonight? • Nach dtógfaidh siad é? – from tóg, “take”[nakh dōg-ih shee-ad ey]Won’t they take it? • Cá nglanfaidh sé anocht? – from glan, “clean”[caw nglan-ih shey anokht]Where will he clean tonight?
Negate a phrase, lenite the verb! • Ní ólfaidh mé sa teach. - from ól, “drink” [nee ōl-ih mey suh tyakh] I won’t drink in the house. • Ní fhágfaidh sé leabhair anseo. – fág, “leave”[nee aw-ih shey lyowair an-sho]He won’t leave books here. • Ní thógfaidh sí é. – from tóg, “take”[nee hōg-ih she ey]She won’t take him.

Ask a Question, Eclipse the Verb! • An mbrisfidh tú é? – from bris, “break”[an mrish-ih too ey]Will you break it? • Nach dtuigfidh siad é? – tuig, “understand”[nakh dig-ih shee-ad ey]Won’t they understand him? • Cá gcuirfidh muid é? – from cuir, “put”[caw gwir-ih mwid ey]Where will we put it?
Negate a phrase, lenite the verb! • Ní léifidh mé é sa teach. - from léigh, “read” [nee ley-ih mé ey suh tyakh]I will not read it in the house. • Ní chuirfidh sé leabhair anseo. – cuir, “put”[nee khwir-ih shey lyowair an-sho]He did not put books here. • Ní dhruidfidh sí an doras. – from druid, “shut”[nee ghrij-ih she an doras]She won’t shut the door.
