Horizon 2020 - Overview The EU’s new 2014 to 2020 research and innovation funding programme Increased overall budget of €70 billion A single programme bringing together three EU previous programmes Increased focus on innovation – from research to market, all forms of innovation Increased emphasis on demonstrating Impact Focus on major societal challenges facing EU society, e.g. health, clean energy and resource efficiency Single reimbursement rate per project for all types of organisation: 100% + 25% for a research and innovation project 70% + 25% for an innovation project

Rationale for Societal Challenges • Major current challenges in Europe + EU policy objectives • Breakthrough solutions come from multi-disciplinary collaborations, including social sciences and humanities • Addressing challenges requires full research & innovation cycle, from research to market • Focus on policy priorities without predetermining technologies or types of solutions to be developed

Societal Challenges: individual call topics for funding • Two-year Work Programme and less prescriptive approach • Proposals still require collaboration with partners elsewhere in Europe • Increased use of two-stage calls • Standardised call text stating: • Specific Challenge • Scope • Expected Impact • Call text will define whether a ‘Research and Innovation Action’ or an ‘Innovation Action’ and the reimbursement rate, and will give an idea of the budget proposals should request • All documents accessible via Research Participant Portal website: http://ec.europa.eu/research/participants/portal/
