Objectives 2009-2011 • To stimulate demand for mathematics-specific CPD, contributing to the strengthening of the mathematical knowledge of teachers. • To lead and improve the coordination, accessibilityand availabilityof mathematics-specific CPD. • To enable all teachers of mathematics to identify and access high qualityCPD that will best meet their needs and aspirations

  5. My Personal Vision • My vision is that the NCETM will provide opportunities for all teachers of mathematicsto embark on their own personalised mathematical CPD journeys

  10. Adding Value in Mathematics Paul Glendinning was very stimulating. Workshops were useful for info gathering and networking. Plenary was lively and interesting for final slot All excellent. Peter McOwen's talk - fantastic. Open talk very interesting. Lots of fascinating and useful ideas to investigate and think about CPD partnerships between schools, colleges & HEIs Manchester, December 2008 over 200 delegates Worked in partnership with MoreMathsGrads, University of Manchester, Mathematics Department One Message I remember Subliminal messages and cues can shape learners’ views of about mathematics, often negatively, at a very early stage – if the maths part of the primary school day is introduced with a sigh and ‘Ok, now, we’re going to do mathematics’, the message that maths is hard, or boring, is conveyed, rather than a sense of excitement.

Influential Mathematics Teachers IMT conferences Nearly 550 delegates in total Dissemination of HMI report Mathematics: Understanding the Score I went along because I needed the boost of feeling good about my KS1 team... AND I REALLY DO. I can see we do lots of things really well, and the session gave me a great model to scaffold my Key Stage meeting tomorrow which will hopefully boost the rest of the team into feeling like we are achieving highly! An excellent event. Really cannot wait to use the self-evaluation tool - and encourage staff to use it • Message from Jane Jones HMI, Specialist Advisor for Mathematics • We need to think carefully about • who to influence? • how to influence? • what aspects of mathematics are the most influential in developing the mathematician in each pupil?

London Headteachers Event Headteachers talk about creating and sustaining excellent mathematics departmentsJan 2009 Major challenges of recruitment and retention of good mathematics teachers The NCETM is extending this work across England and to primary schools Projects and outreach work takes energy and costs but what you get back in the way of staff involvement and development is priceless London Headteacher Minister for London Schools, Sarah McCarthy-Fry MP The 30 per cent increase in the number of students studying maths at A level since 2002 is very encouraging… The creation of the NCETM is part of this upward drive And we thank the National Centre for all its work….
