Communication • Communication is a process that allows people to exchange information by several methods. • Exchange requires feedback. • So it is the process of people sending and receiving information through some channel Banda Ramadan-Introduction
Main Components of communication • Sender • Message • Communication Channel • Receiver • Feedback • Appraisal of the communication process Sender Message Receiver Banda Ramadan-Introduction
Components of communication (cont) • The Sender refers to the initiator of the communication process, the original emitter of the message who expects a response to it • The Message is the final interpretation of the subject of the communication process expressed in words, signs or symbols. Components of communication (cont) • Communication Channel is the path through which the message passes from the moment it leaves the sender to the moment it reaches the final destination –the receiver- • Formal channel: is the channel set by the organization according to its system of communication • Informal: is the channel that result form common social relationships within the organization or its outsides environment not necessarily consistent with the system of communication adapted by the organization. Components of communication (cont) • The receiver is the person who stands at the other end of the communication process • Feedback: response from the receiver, the response may be a direct answer to the message or a clear promise to answer. • Appraisal of the communication process: enables us to evaluate the communication process by checking if its objectives have been achieved. Oral communication • Oral communication: is the information expressed in words and transmitted in speech. It refers to oral or spoken communication rather than written communication (ex: meeting, interview ) • With oral communication you must have the ability to explain and present your idea in clear language, to diverse audience Banda Ramadan-Introduction
Oral communication (cont) • You must have the ability to design your delivery to a given audience, using appropriate styles and approaches, and understanding of the importance of non-verbal signs in oral communication. Banda Ramadan-Introduction
Written communication • Written communication refers to information expressed in words, symbols, or signs but in writing • In written communication you must have the ability to write effectively in a range of contexts and a variety of different audience and purposes, with a command language. Written communication (cont) • It includes the ability to tailor your writing to a given audience, using appropriate styles and approaches. • It also includes electronic communication such as SMS, email, discussion boards, chat rooms, and instant messaging Banda Ramadan-Introduction
Non-verbal communication • Non-verbal communication refers to information expressed through using body language, signs, tones of voice, gestures, facial expressions, or attitudes, and also the use of pictures, icons, and symbols. Banda Ramadan-Introduction
