Instructions – Before You Begin • Print out all of the required documents from the course website. • http://www.austincc.edu/mlt/mdclinical/mdclinical_docs.htm • Refer to the document during each appropriate section of this presentation.
Attendance • The week before your rotation begins make a courtesy call. • Write down the answers to all of the following questions: • Introduce yourself and that you are the ACC Molecular Diagnostics student who will be performing your rotation at their site • Ask who you will report to on your first day (provide them with the date and day of the week that you begin) • Verify the time of arrival. • Ask about parking if you do not know. • Ask for location of lab if you do not know. • Ask if there's anything else you need to be aware of such as a sign in procedure, student badge specific to that site, etc.
Attendance • Regular and punctual attendance required. • The attendance form must be completed upon arrival and departure each day. • Write in arrival time, have staff member initial. • Write departure time, have staff member initial. • Incomplete forms will require the student to return to the clinical site for completion. If staff members are unwilling to initial additional clinical time will need to be scheduled. • Absences are not allowed unless there is an illness or dire emergency. • Failure to notify clinical instructor AND ACC faculty member of an absence will result in an immediate 10 point deduction from the course grade. • Time missed as result of tardies or absences MUST be made up. Forty hours of clinical time must be documented.
Dress Code • ACC students are required to wear teal scrubs during the clinical rotation – no other colors or patterns are allowed. • Close toed shoes, preferably comfortable tennis shoes. • Student ID badge must be visible either clipped ABOVE the waist or on a lanyard. • Review additional requirements in the course syllabus. • Students who are not in compliance with the dress code will be required to leave the clinical site and return when properly attired. • Time missed must be made up.
Duties • The purpose of the clinical rotation is to expose students to modern techniques in the molecular diagnostics laboratory. • Due to the sensitive nature and expense of kits used for testing students primary role will be observation. Staff may ask students to assist with decontamination, restocking or other non-critical tasks. • There is a lot of “wait” time for each procedure. Students may be bounced from bench to bench to view different steps in testing. • There may be times when there is nothing to observe. Students will be expected to complete instrument reports and review the procedure manual for the major tests performed. • Procedure manuals – review the first parts of each procedure. • Package inserts – review the product inserts for valuable information.
BlackBoard • At the end of the rotation use your “Daily Summary” to summarize your activities and experiences during your rotation. • The posting must be at least 150 words in length OR LONGER. • Items to cover: • Testing performed, name of tests and instruments used. • Abnormal or interesting results. • Troubleshooting performed. • What you were most excited about. • This post MUST be completed the Sunday following your rotation.
Attendance, Daily Competency Evaluation, Action Plan Form • Review the instructions on page 1 CAREFULLY! • The first form is to document your laboratory orientation. The first section “Orientation to Clinical Site” should be completed on your first day. • The second section should also be completed on your first day. • The second form is to document the date and time of arrival each day. Have the form initialed by a staff member when you arrive. • Write in the time you leave and sign the form. • Have the staff member you working with check the appropriate box under “Progression” and sign the form. IMPORTANT: Make sure a box is checked BEFORE you leave!!!
Attendance, Daily Competency Evaluation, Action Plan Form • There are 5 copies of the “Competencies” form. • Use a different form for each bench. Make additional copies as necessary. • Many molecular procedures are not completed in one day. Be sure to observe each stage of the procedure and have the staff member initial the CORRECT form. • Write the major pieces of equipment used at the bottom of the form. • Some procedures use the same piece of equipment for certain steps, i.e., the light cycler or thermocycler. It may be appropriate for the staff member to put in “NA” for a procedure using the same equipment since a repeat discussion would not be necessary.
Instrumentation (Automation) Report • A report is required for each major piece of equipment. • During a non-observation time walk around the lab and make a list of the large pieces of equipment. IMPORTANT: Use appropriate PPE when entering “clean areas” and remove prior to leaving. • Print out multiple copies of the form. • Find the instrument manual and fill in the form. This allows you to copy/paste some of the information directly into the form. IMPORTANT: Only copy/paste pertinent information. • At home, type all of the information into the form and submit to BlackBoard.
Student Clinical Evaluation • Print out one copy of the form. • Fill in the top part of each page. • Prior to the last day of the rotation give the form to the molecular laboratory supervisor. • At the end of the last day the supervisor should provide you with a completed copy of the form. You may wish to gently remind the supervisor on Thursday. • MAKE SURE IT IS SIGNED! • Review, sign, and if you wish, make comments. • Submit completed form to the ACC instructor.
Daily Summary of Activities Form • Each day make notes in your spiral notebook regarding answers to questions asked, testing observed including specific steps and equipment used. • Use this information to complete the form. • Upload into BlackBoard when finished. • This is NOT OPTIONAL!
Site Evaluation • Go to the link provided at the beginning of this presentation. • Must be completed Sunday after the completion of your rotation. • Takes approximately 15 minutes. • Required for successful completion of the rotation. • This information is incredibly important and will be used to improve the program. • The link is found on
Submission of Clinical Paperwork • Paperwork may be submitted: • Preferred: Make an appointment to hand deliver. • Mail to Keri Brophy-Martinez, 3401Webberville Road, Austin, TX 78702. MAKE A COPY BEFORE MAILING ORIGINALS! • Scan and email to instructor, mail originals • Fax to instructor at 512-223-5897, mail originals • This must be done by the Monday following the last day of your rotation. If a Monday appointment does not work we can schedule for a day convenient with your schedule. • INCOMPLETE PAPERWORK WILL REQUIRE YOU TO GO BACK TO THE CLINICAL SITE. Staff members may not be willing to check off after you complete your rotation so be sure that appropriate paperwork is completed DAILY. Review each day for completion!!!
Research Paper • http://www.austincc.edu/mlt/mdclinical/mdclinical_paper.htm • READ THE REQUIREMENTS AND INSTRUCTIONS CAREFULLY! • You must complete the “ACC Plagiarism and Citing Sources” tutorial by week 2 of the semester. • The tutorial takes approximately 30 minutes to complete. • At the end select the option to email me. • Post your topic to BlackBoard. I would not wait until your rotation is completed to do this. • This is worth a major portion of your grade and college level work is expected!!! I strongly encourage you to get started on this as soon as possible.
Research Paper • Specific Requirements • Cover page • Five pages of CONTENT, cover page, references, pictures, etc. do not count, only the text of the document. Add pictures, tables, graphs AFTER writing the paper. • FULL TEXT PROFESSIONAL JOURNAL ARTICLES are required. These can be scanned and uploaded or provide the URL. • College level writing is expected, do NOT plagiarize. BlackBoard has a plagirism detector and you will be penalized heavily for plagiarism.
