The nuclear arms race was central to the Cold War. Many feared where the Cold War was going with the belief that the more nuclear weapons you had, the more powerful you were. Both America and Russia massively built up their stockpiles of nuclear weapons. Each side was always trying to close the “missile gap”.
Arms Race Time-Line 1945 - United States uses first atomic weapon on Japan. 1949 - Soviet Union tests first a-bomb. 1952 - United States tests first hydrogen bomb 1953 - USSR tests first hydrogen bomb H - Bombs = Thermonuclear Bombs.
1957 – Atlas Missile is launched by the US. Capable of traveling 6000 miles and hit a target within 1 mile. (took 1 hour to prepare for launch)
1957 – Sputnik is launched. Soviet Union has missile superiority. ICBMs are introduced. (Inter-Continental Ballistic Missiles)
The Soviet Union stuns Americans by launching a missile carrying the earth’s first artificial satellite. If Soviet scientists could launch a Sputnik, U.S. analysts reason, they would soon be able to loft nuclear warheads to the United States. The implications are profound: warning times decrease from hours to minutes and, more importantly, there is no known means of defending against a ballistic missile attack.
1959 - Polaris Submarines and “Minute Man” missiles tested. (US)
1961 – TzarBomba is detonated by the Soviet Union. More powerful than all the bombs used during WWII.
China exploded its first Nuclear Weapon in 1963 increasing Cold War fear and tension in Asia.
(PTBT) Partial Test Ban Treaty - 1963 Banned nuke testing in the ocean, in the atmosphere, and space.
