Welcome to the Internet • The Internet is a global network of networks. • People and organizations connect into the Internet so they can access its massive store of shared information. • The Internet is an inherently participative medium. Anybody can publish information or create new services. • The Internet is a cooperative endeavor -- no organization is in charge of the net.

  3. How Big is the Internet? • Microsoft's Bing team puts the amount of web pages at "over one trillion". And Google has already indexed more than one trillion discrete web addresses. • There are more addresses than there are people on Earth, about 150 web addresses per person in the world. • If you spent just one minute reading every website in existence, you'd be kept busy for 31,000 years. Without any sleep. . . • Mark Higginson, director of analytics for Nielsen Online, said the global online population had jumped 16 per cent since 2008. • "Approximately 1.46 billion people worldwide now use the internet. . . The largest internet population belongs to China.   4. How to Connect to the Internet? • Computer • Connection: Phone Line, Cable, DSL, Wireless, ... • Modem • Network Software (protocol): TCP/IP • Application Software: Web Browser, Email, ... • Internet Service Provider (ISP)

  5. What Can People Do on the Internet? • Send and receive email messages. • Download free software with FTP (File Transfer Protocol). • Chat with friends (Yahoo messenger) • Surf the World Wide Web. • And much, much more. • There is no charge for most services.

  6. Web • The Web is a distributed information system. • The Web contains multimedia. • Information in the Web is connected by hyperlinks.

  7. E-mail • Used in sending messages (text, image, audio…) • E-mail client: Thunderbird, Outlook, Web Browser • Free e-mail service: gmail, yahoo, hotmail… Access email when user can access Internet Download email to computer and read it offline later

  8. FTP • A service that use FTP protocol to transfers file (upload/download) between users and FTP server • FTP client: windows explorer (in windows XP), Cute FTP, FileZilla …

  9. Instant message • Used to send message among users in real-time. • Not only text message people can talk to each other, see friend through webcam, send file, share photos… • Yahoo! Messenger, Google Talk, Skype …

  10. Streaming Audio/Video • Anyone can upload an share their songs or clips easily • With youtube.com, clip.vn, nhaccuatui.com… people can upload clips or songs then other can view them or embed them to their own site or blog

  11. Internet Phone • Make a phone call through Internet • With VNPT 171 or Viettel 178 customs can make cheap phone call from their telephone to another telephone or mobile phone. • With blue card VNN by VDC, Skype… user can make phone call from their computer to other computers, telephone or mobile phone.

  12. Blog • Is an online dairy where people can share personal information

  14. E-learning • With e-learning anyone can learn wherever they have a computer connected to the Internet. • Students can join courses, download resources, do exercises, discuss and many more activities. • Best open source e-learning system is Moodle

  15. E-commerce • Help people buy or sell anything from anywhere by using Internet

  16. Online Game • People can play with many other players over Internet • Some players can make money from online games but almost players have to spend a lot of money and time on them

  17. Finding Information on Internet • Lots of sites, lots of sources  how to find needed information? • The answer is: Search engine • Google, Bing … can be used to search not only in text but also in images, songs, movies, e-books and places
